Chapter 2: The Shadow at Paddington

“So, uh… this is it?” Oliver stopped at the forest's edge, his sneakers scuffing against the dirt. He looked up — and up — and up. The trees were massive. Bigger than he’d expected. Twisted, tangled, and so tall it felt like they’d swallowed the sky.

“No turning back now,” Grandpa Frog said, his voice sharp, his cane tapping impatiently. “Unless, of course, you’re planning on letting the shadow win?”

Oliver swallowed hard, gripping his notebook tighter. “No, I — uh, I wasn’t saying that. I just…” He trailed off, staring at the dark, swaying branches. “It looks… alive.”

“That’s because it is alive,” Grandpa Frog said, matter-of-fact. “It’s the Enchanted Forest.”

“Yeah, but alive how?” Max asked, stepping back a little, his wings twitching nervously. “Alive like… plants alive? Or alive like ‘it’s going to eat us’ alive?”

Grandpa Frog didn’t answer right away. Instead, he gave Max a long, almost bored look. “You’ll…
